Advancing global standards for long-term data archiving and interoperability

26 May 2026

The LOTAR Q1 2026 workshop, held in March in North Charleston, USA, brought together a strong international community of experts—around 40 participants onsite and over 20 online—to advance global standards for long-term data archiving and interoperability.

A key outcome of the meeting was the continued progress across multiple LOTAR workstreams, demonstrating the initiative’s growing impact on secure, sustainable digital engineering. Significant milestones were achieved in areas such as 3D mechanical CAD, product lifecycle management, electrical wiring, and model-based systems engineering (MBSE). These included advancing new editions of key standards, resolving ballot comments, and preparing several specifications for external release—steps that bring industry closer to robust, harmonized approaches for long-term data preservation.

The workshop also highlighted strong collaboration with related interoperability groups, including CAx-IF and MBx-IF, ensuring alignment between standards development and real-world implementation. Technical discussions covered emerging needs such as persistent identifiers, intelligent models, composite materials, and cross-domain data exchange—capabilities that are essential for future digital continuity across complex supply chains.

Equally important was the emphasis on community growth and knowledge sharing. New member organizations were welcomed, and discussions focused on strengthening collaboration with adjacent standardization bodies, as well as improving onboarding and training for new participants. This reinforces LOTAR’s role not only as a standards body but also as a global platform for expertise and innovation.

Overall, the meeting demonstrated clear progress toward enabling reliable, interoperable digital data over decades—delivering tangible value to aerospace, defense, and other advanced manufacturing industries.

The next LOTAR international meeting will take place from 28–30 September 2026 in Frankfurt, Germany, in conjunction with Engineering Interoperability Day, bringing together the STEP and JT communities for further collaboration.
